Minister Roberts high in praise for CAC teams

Trinidad Guardian :: 09.07.2013

Sport Minister Anil Roberts has praised the achievement of the national track and field team which returned home with 13 medals (5 gold, 4 silver, 4 bronze) from the CAC Senior Championships which concluded on Sunday in Mexico.

Roberts was specially pleased with the relay team of Shauna Fermin, Romona Modeste, Alena Brooks and Sparkle McKnight who copped gold and broke a long-standing national record. “It’s a remarkable effort by the women athletes, especially on the heels of the double record (100m and 200m) set by Kelly Ann Baptiste at the National Championships. The entire team performance bodes well for the World Championships in August. The athletes must be eagerly awaiting the chance to prove themselves on the world stage and Trinidad & Tobago is equally ready to cheer them on.”

The team broke the record which stood for 26 years, setting a new standard of 3:30.64.

Also creating history on the weekend was the U17 water polo team which won gold at the CCCAN Swimming Championships in Costa Rica—the first team to do so at this level. The team has also qualified for the Pan Am Junior Championships to be held from 24-31 August in Argentina. Trinidad and Tobago also picked up several awards at the tournament, including MVP (Adrian Hinds), Leon Daniel (Most Goals) and Sebastien Van Reeken (Best Goalkeeper).

The Sports Company assisted with the successful water polo team through Kevin Macintyre, a massage therapist attached to the Elite Development & Performance Unit at SPORTT. Macintrye is also the coach of the Bishops Junior School team which supplied four members to the national team, including MVP Adrian Hinds.
